Jiménez Trophy

The Legend of the Jiménez Trophy: A Masterclass in Drunken Persistence

In 2011, three legends of the links—David Horwill, Pat Huggins, and Bob Tisdall—triumphed in a 9-hole swindle at Woodcote Park. Their prize? A life-changing £8 each and the internal glow of mediocre sporting success.

However, as the post-round beers began to flow, their ego outpaced their bank balances. Here is how a ten-quid trinket became a piece of Society folklore:

The Great Negotiating Disaster

Flush with the confidence that only several pints can provide, the trio decided they needed a trophy. They set their sights on Mike Cherry’s "Nearest-the-Pin" award from the afternoon session.

  • The Target: A trophy worth roughly £10.
  • The Opening Bid: Reasonable.
  • The Final Bid: A staggering £150.
  • The Result: Mike Cherry, possessing either nerves of steel or a deep-seated grudge, refused to sell. The man could not be bought.

Enter "Miguel"

Undeterred by Mike’s stubbornness, Bob decided that if they couldn't buy history, they would manufacture it. He commissioned the Miguel Ángel Jiménez Trophy, named after the world's coolest golfer, to be presented alongside one of Miguel’s signature cigars.

The ceremony was a roaring success:

  1. David Horwill accepted the trophy under his new alias, "Miguel."
  2. More beer was sacrificed to the golf gods.
  3. Tina (Pat’s wife) ended up smoking the ceremonial cigar, presumably because someone had to show the men how to actually finish something.

The Legacy

Miraculously, Bob and Pat have managed to keep the trophy from being left in a taxi or used as a doorstop. From this day forward, the Golf Society will present this "prestigious" award to the team with the best score at each event.

It stands as a permanent monument to the fact that if you can’t win a trophy fairly, you can always just drink enough beer until you decide to build one yourself.
